Money Is the Smallest Form of Wealth: Why High Income Doesn’t Always Bring Peace

February 02, 2026•2 min read

You can make multiple six figures and still feel anxious every night.

You can make 100k and sleep peacefully.

Recently, I sat in a room with Kate Northrup and was reminded of something uncomfortable:
Money is the smallest form of wealth.

Income Doesn’t Always Equal Security

I have coached people with impressive income who wake up at 3 a.m. doing mental math.

  • How long will this last?

  • What if I lose it?

  • Why is someone else ahead?

I have also worked with people earning far less who feel steady, clear, and are not constantly bracing for the floor to drop.

And I have seen the reverse.

The number was not the driver.

The internal narrative was.

The Hidden Cost of Scarcity Thinking

If someone believes there is never enough, it bleeds into everything.

They overwork.
They cling to titles they do not even want.
They negotiate from fear.
They say yes to things that cost them their health.

The outside looks successful.
The inside feels hunted.

Explore Your Relationship With Money

If these ideas resonate with you, Kate Northrup’s Relaxed Money Course is a practical place to begin exploring a healthier relationship with money, work, and personal capacity.

What Changes When You Trust There Is Enough

When someone trusts that there is enough, their energy changes.
They collaborate without paranoia.
They make long-term decisions.
They take risks that are considered.
They build instead of scrambling.

Your Career Amplifies Your Internal Narrative

Your career amplifies whatever you practice internally.
Money can expand your options.
It can create breathing room. It can absolutely matter.

But it cannot regulate an anxious nervous system.

That work happens before the raise.

Practicing Sufficiency

On days when my brain wants to spiral, I practice noticing sufficiency.
Air in my lungs.
Light through the window.
Trees growing without forcing it.
A flower that blooms fully, even though it will not last.

This is recalibration.

If your body only knows scarcity, no compensation package will quiet it for long.
The wealth shaping your trajectory starts in your perception.

A Question Worth Asking

Be honest with yourself.
Are you building from sufficiency?
Or are you trying to earn your way out of anxiety?
